The Important Role of Voltage Controlled Oscillator in 5G Small Base Station

With the arrival of 5g era, indoor data high-speed interaction has become the mainstream network application scenarios, such as VR / AR, 4K / 8K, etc., the huge increase of indoor network signal coverage dimension expansion demand will obviously bring the popularization of 5g small base station application synchronously, because compared with large base station, small base station has the advantages of easy deployment, easy maintenance, low power consumption, low cost, etc.. Obviously, small base station has become an important part of 5g network. 


5G small base station introduces ultra dense networking architecture, which has the ability of visual operation and maintenance, accurate positioning, and intelligent analysis. In addition to solving the network coverage problem, it can also meet the needs of vertical industry users in fine network construction, intelligent operation, location service, and customer fine service. From the perspective of development trend, 5g small base station will further realize the integration of edge computing through virtualization and cloud, and support for intelligent operation and maintenance, which will better provide 5g special network satisfying the three application scenarios of emmb, ulllc and MTC, and realize the application of vertical industries such as machine vision, high-precision positioning, vr/ar, vehicle networking, data non-park and so on.


5G base station network equipment can not do without high-precision voltage controlled temperature compensated oscillator to provide a stable clock signal source for the chip. If the crystal oscillator has problems, the network will face signal interruption or unstable network data transmission.  Generally, the crystal oscillator of 5g small base station is VCTCXO. The advantages of VCTCXO are high precision, low phase noise and wide temperature characteristic.


Crystal oscillator provides two formats: voltage controlled temperature compensation (VCTCXO) and temperature compensation (TCXO), which can be realized by connecting the control voltage VC to the pin or not, which is convenient for different users to choose. The voltage controlled temperature compensated oscillator VCTCXO has very high stability, and its frequency offset stability can reach ± 0.5ppm (temperature characteristic ± 2ppm).
